If you are sending a document outside Canada, you may be told that it requires an apostille.
An apostille is a form of authentication that confirms the signature and seal on a notarized document so it can be recognized in another country.
When Is an Apostille Required?
An apostille may be required when:
Your document is being sent to another country
The receiving country is part of the Hague Apostille Convention
The third party specifically requests an apostille
Not all international documents require one. The receiving organization determines what level of authentication is necessary.
What Happens First?
Before a document can receive an apostille, it may need to be notarized.
Notarization and apostille are separate steps.
Important Reminder
Our notary public does not decide whether your document requires an apostille. Always follow the instructions provided by the organization or authority requesting your document.
If you are unsure, confirm with the receiving party before booking your appointment.
